The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced the reintroduction of its enhanced "Samansaman" sanitation system as part of efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and enforce sanitation regulations across the metropolis.

The initiative, which takes effect from July 1, will see the deployment of a special sanitation task force made up of environmental officers, military personnel and police officers to selected communities in Kumasi.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 8, KMA explained that the move forms part of renewed efforts by the Assembly to tackle indiscriminate littering and other environmental sanitation offences that continue to affect parts of the city.

"Effective 1 July 2026, a special sanitation task force comprising environmental officers, military, and police personnel will be deployed to selected communities in the city to enforce environmental laws and bye-laws," the Assembly said.

According to the statement, the task force will operate between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on every working day, with offenders facing immediate prosecution.

The Assembly cautioned that persons found violating sanitation regulations would be arrested and taken before the courts.

"Offenders will be hauled immediately before a court of law for prosecution," the statement stressed.

Meanwhile, the KMA has announced that its next Sanitation Day exercise will be held on July 1, within the Abrepo Electoral Area and will be led by the area Assembly Member.

The Assembly called on residents to keep their surroundings clean at all times and support ongoing efforts to improve sanitation conditions in the Ashanti Regional capital.

The "Samansaman" sanitation initiative was previously used by city authorities as an enforcement mechanism to ensure compliance with environmental laws and promote a cleaner urban environment.
