A Ghanaian Facebook user, Adu Adjei, has raised concerns over alleged losses during the importation process, claiming that several bags of rice went missing after his shipment arrived in the country.
In a post on his Facebook timeline, he stated that he imported 50 bags of rice from the United States to Ghana at a cost of $1,150, approximately GH₵12,650.
According to him, when the consignment arrived at Tema Port, import duties were initially pegged at GH₵15,000 before being reduced to GH₵12,000, an amount he said was nearly equivalent to the value of the goods.
He alleged that four bags of rice went missing before the shipment left the port. He further claimed that the remaining goods were later moved to the VIP station at Circle in Accra for distribution, where an additional two bags reportedly went missing.
Although he indicated that compensation was later provided for the missing items, Adu Adjei maintained that the incident highlights deeper systemic issues.
“It raises a serious question, where is the accountability, where is the supervision,” he wrote, adding that conducting honest business in Ghana has become increasingly difficult due to what he described as exploitation within parts of the system.
He also alleged that some customs officials exercise unchecked authority and called for stronger oversight and improved accountability within the importation process.
