The Mayor of Accra, Mr. Adjiri Blankson, has stated that the Capital city will undergo a major sanitation exercise to rid it of filth ahead of the Ghana 2008 tournament. He said the AMA owes it a duty to Ghana to ensure that a good legacy is achieved after the football fiesta.

Mr Adjiri Blankson made this call at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the CAN 2008 and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) yesterday in Accra.

Under the agreement, the AMA will collaborate and work with the LOC in different responsibilities to help stage one of the best African football tournament. By this, the AMA would, among other things, help the LOC to enforce its Park and Ride Exercise at designated areas to facilitate free movement within the precincts of the stadium before, during and after matches.

The LOC, with the help of the AMA, will designate specific areas in the Metropolis for public viewing to enable people who cannot afford the tickets to watch the matches on big screens

The Assembly, according to the pact, shall also collaborate with all public and private transportation agencies and institutions to ensure improved services and accessibility in the city -venue during the tournament.

The AMA has also been charged to undertake a general beautification exercise of the venue-city, specifically as it relates to creation of night markets at designated areas and repainting of scenic buildings.

The Chairman of the LOC Board, Dr. Kofi Amoah, reiterated the need for the collaboration with the AMA and indicated that such collaborations with all the four venue-cities, will go a long way to realize the full potential of the tourney as well as leaving in its trail a boom in the tourism industry.
