As Ghana marks 69th anniversary let us building tomorrow's leaders today – Dr Siaw Agyepong

Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies has said as Ghana marks the 69th anniversary of independence, the nation must be strategic in building tomorrow's leaders today.

He noted that 69 years in the life of a nation requires a rapid transformation of governance and a collective effort from individuals, organisations, and policymakers to build the next generation of leadership with specific intentions and purposes.

Dr Siaw Agyepong noted that, after 69 years, our educational systems must change. “We call on educators to prioritise leadership development and civic education in schools and universities and employers to provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills and gain work experience.

“We call on policymakers to create an enabling environment that supports youth leadership development and civic engagement and individuals to take ownership of their leadership development and inspire others to do the same.”

Dr Siaw Agyepong, in an interview with Modern Ghana News on the 69th Independence Celebration, stressed the urgent need for the nation to prioritise investment in youth leadership development, which he said is required for Ghana to unlock the potential of its young people and build a brighter future for all.

The Jospong Group Executive Chairman noted that as Ghana marks the 69th anniversary of independence, there is the need for Ghana to provide leadership in African transformation.

“Ghana must champion the need for African governments to nurture the next generation of leaders…it is critical for Africa to accelerate development, growth, and progress.

"Africa’s next generation of strategic thinkers, innovators, and managing directors must not emerge accidentally; it must be intentional and intentionally developed," Dr Siaw Agyepong emphasised.

Dr Siaw Agyepong noted that the commemoration of Independence Day must not just be ceremonial but a pragmatic moment for reflections and resolved to change things rapidly.

“Independence Day commemoration must rekindle the spirit of patriotism, loyalty to the state and selflessness in every Ghanaian" and emphasised that leadership is about responsibility and preparing the next generation with capacity, strength, and passion.

Dr Siaw Agyepong linked past success to future preparedness, asserting that nurturing leadership is crucial for adapting to dynamic conditions, “and at 69 years Ghana is old enough to stand on its feet to give meaning to Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s declaration that the Blackman is capable of managing his own affairs.”

He also advocated for effective leadership across Africa, which he described as critical to the continent's rapid development to drive economic growth, improve governance, and enhance the quality of life for citizens.

Dr Siaw Agyepong noted that as Africa continues to strive for economic growth and development in a volatile global economic environment, the need for effective leadership has never been more pressing.

“The continent’s future success depends on the ability of its young people to lead with vision, integrity, and passion in a global competitive world,” he said.

Dr Siaw Agyepong noted many young Africans face barriers to leadership development, including limited access to quality education, training, and mentorship opportunities.

The Jospong Executive Chairman revealed that these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and creativity, explaining that with the rise of digital technologies, social media, and online platforms, young Africans have unprecedented access to information, networks, and resources that can help them develop their leadership skills and connect in the global world.
