Zoomlion introduces door to door refuse collection in Adenta

Mr. David Quaye Annang, Chief Executive Officer of the Tema Municipal Assembly (TMA) has stressed the need for Ghanaians to change their habit of littering and dumping waste indiscriminately in the city.

“In spite of the various activities undertaken to ensure that our nation is kept clean, there are some of us who find it difficult to change our habits as far as indiscriminate littering and dumping of refuse is concerned," he noted.

In speech read on his behalf at the launch of the tricycle door-to-door refuse collection service at Adenta, Mr Annang therefore appealed to Ghanaians to assist in the nation's drive in tackling sanitation issues and improving on the environment.

The tricycle door-to-door refuse collection service, a product of Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL), under its Private Job Unit seeks to bring solid waste collection at the door-step in urban communities at cheaper cost.

Mr. Annang said the issue about sanitation was quite close to the health and beauty of the country and as such had developed international dimension with developing partners committing time and money towards solving sanitation problems.

The TMA boss said since people drew comfort from their homes and communities it was important to keep those places clean.

"The tricycle service being a swift intervention will help to clear off the waste by properly managing refuse they generated," he observed.

He appealed to communities to assist in educating themselves on the need to help keep Ghana and Adenta clean.

Mr Opare Hammond, Member of Parliament (MP) for Adenta expressed his worry over the attitude of some residents who only want to enjoy the services but refused to pay for them.

Mr Hammond therefore appealed to residents to pay for services rendered to them to enable Zoomlion Ghana Limited run efficient and effective services.

The MP urged ZGL to consider offering free services to public schools as part of their social responsibilities.

Reverend Nii Sowah, Chairman of Kpeshie Zonal Council who chaired the function said sanitation issues had been a big challenge to government saying the nation needed scientific and pragmatic mechanisms to tackle it.

According to him, the development and tourism potentials of the nation depended on security and sanitation issues and called for a combined efforts of all Ghanaians in that direction.

Nii Sowah Okataban II, Adenta Mantse commended the efforts of ZGL in waste management and ensuring a clean environment.

Mrs. Emma Akyea-Boakye, head of Private Jobs Unit, ZGL said the project was in response to the community demand for a proactive and professional approach to their waste management needs.

Mrs. Akyea-Boakye said under the project, solid waste would be collected and disposed of at the right place and on regular basis so as to ensure clean and environmentally friendly neighbourhoods.

To identify Zoomlion riders, she said they would be in the company's uniform with "Private Jobs" inscribed, as well as identity cards.

"I am pleased that all stakeholders including community leaders are actively engaged in the project. It is our hope that this project will be fruitful and mutually beneficial to all of us," she added.
