Let's vote Bawumia as 2028 flagbearer if we wish to return to power — Berekum East NPP chairman
The Berekum East constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwaku Kankam, has appealed to party delegates to vote for former Vice Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries.
He believes the former Vice President is the most capable person to lead the NPP’s comeback in the 2028 elections after its defeat in 2024.
Speaking during Dr. Bawumia’s campaign tour of his constituency on Friday, October 24, Mr. Kankam said the NPP’s history has always been defined by persistence and loyalty to tradition.
He cited former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as examples of leaders who fought their way to victory through perseverance.
“If we truly want to return to power, we must close our ranks and rally behind Dr. Bawumia. If we turn our backs on him now, we risk staying in opposition longer than we expect.
“Our story as a party has always been about resilience. President Kufuor tried twice before winning. President Akufo-Addo also had to contest three times before succeeding. That’s the spirit of the NPP,” he said.
Mr. Kankam noted that Dr. Bawumia’s political journey follows that same pattern with experience and dedication that make him the right person to unite the base and restore confidence in the party.
“Dr. Bawumia represents that same fighting spirit. He has been loyal, he has sacrificed, and he understands the vision of the NPP. It’s only fair that we give him the chance to finish what he started,” he said.
The Berekum East chairman further advised that even though life in opposition can be tough members should frown on internal division which he said could keep the party out of power for years.
He also urged delegates to consider the symbolism behind Dr. Bawumia’s number three position on the ballot, describing it as a reflection of strength, balance, and unity.
