NPP Minority will be the Majority caucus in 2028 — Afenyo-Markin
Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed confidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority caucus will become the Majority in Parliament after the 2028 general elections.
According to him, although the NPP side remains small in number, its members are determined to stand firm, work hard, and remain guided by discipline and faith to win back the trust of Ghanaians.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, October 21, Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the caucus will draw inspiration from the experience of Speaker Alban Bagbin, who led the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to recover politically after their defeat in the 2000 elections.
He also cited the NDC’s resurgence between 2016 and 2020 as proof that political setbacks can be reversed through commitment and hard work.
“Mr. Speaker, we are a proud, mighty few who speak truth to power and work tirelessly. Guided by discipline, hard work, and our faith in God, we will rise again,” he stated.
“We are inspired by your own hard work, Mr. Speaker. When your party lost in 2000, you led a charge with fewer numbers and made progress. We believe that come 2028, the Minority will be the Majority,” he added.
The NPP, which had 137 MPs plus one independent member prior to the 2024 general elections, lost several seats, leaving them with 88, and subsequently lost one more in the Akwatia by-election following the demise of Ernest Yaw Kumi.
