Ghana Maritime Authority hosts delegation from Nigerian Defence Intelligence College

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has welcomed a delegation from Nigeria’s elite Defence Intelligence College (DIC), marking a significant advancement in bilateral security cooperation between Ghana and Nigeria.

The 45-member delegation, led by DIC Commandant Rear Admiral P.E. Effah, comprises senior military and intelligence officers participating in the 2025 Advanced Defence Intelligence Officers’ Course as part of their study tour to Ghana.

Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, Director-General of the GMA, emphasised the strategic importance of the engagement, noting that deepening security collaboration was essential for both nations. "Such partnerships are vital to safeguarding our shared maritime interests and ensuring the safety and prosperity of our citizens," he stated.

During the meeting, the GMA showcased its advanced Vessel Traffic Management and Information System (VTMIS), a key component of Ghana’s maritime security framework. The system enables real-time surveillance of the nation’s 550-kilometre coastline, effectively detecting illicit activities such as piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing within Ghana's territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The presentation highlighted how VTMIS enhances regional Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), a critical asset in the Gulf of Guinea and recognised as a global hotspot for maritime threats.

Rear Admiral P.E. Effah noted that the delegation's decision to visit Ghana highlights the country's pivotal role in regional security. He pointed to Ghana’s historical ties with Nigeria and its leadership in defence, security, and intelligence affairs across West Africa as key reasons for the visit.

This collaboration aligns with broader ECOWAS initiatives aimed at strengthening cross-border security mechanisms and reflects Ghana’s ongoing commitment to advancing intelligence-led maritime governance in West Africa.
