Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi, Minister for Harbours and Railways has won the Techiman North parliamentary primary, held at Atrensu.

Prof Ameyaw Akumfi received 77 of the 80 votes on offer, while his only challenger, Antwi-Boasiako, headmaster of Techiman Secondary school, received just three.

Former Techiman Municipal Chief Executive and currently constituency Chairman for Techiman North, Isaac Osei Antwi, withdrew at the last minute and promised to support the winner.

The Minister, who is also a founding member of the NPP, declared the victory one "for NPP,” stressing that the campaign will begin in earnest with house to house visits, and occasionally, big rallies.

In attendance were top party officials in the Brong Ahafo region including Acting Regional Chairman Adu Gyan, 2nd regional vice chairman Nicholas Asamoah, Regional Organiser Kofi Darko and Felicia Adoma, Women's Organiser, as well as executives from the Wenchi and Nkoranza constituencies.

Nana Kwang, chief of Atrensu, was also present. In a keynote address, the acting regional chairman reiterated the NPP"s determination to win 22 of the 24 seats in the Brong Ahafo Region.

He stressed that they have 8 more seats to pick come December, 2008 to make up the 22 and Techiman North and South seats are “must take seats.”

He congratulated the two candidates and their supporters for making the occasion a memorable one, and tasked the polling station executives to map out a campaign that would highlight the achievements of the NPP government.

To grace the occasion, Mumuni Adama, popularly known as 'Raster' announced his defection from the NDC to the NPP.

The Techiman North seat has never been won by the ruling NPP. Prof Akumfi Ameyaw lost the 2004 parliamentary elections to the NDC's Alex Kyeremeh, but has vowed to win it this time.
