National Youth Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has expressed grave concern about the continued detention of Abdul-Wahab Hannan, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), who was arrested alongside his wife for alleged financial misconduct.
Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, July 4, Mustapha accused state authorities of intentionally using procedural delays to prolong Hannan's detention, despite his reported compliance with bail conditions.
“The wife was granted bail on Monday on a bail condition of 30 million cedis and released to go home because they have children at home after the bail condition was executed. Hannan has been kept in custody even when bail conditions have been met,” he said.
He went on to question the actions of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), alleging that additional bail requirements were only introduced after initial conditions had been satisfied.
“Now EOCO is saying that they want an evaluation report of the bail condition, and we find it intriguing, because while we were running for the sureties to be met, they did not mention that, so why now that the sureties have been met?” he questioned.
“They are just doing this to keep him in custody as long as they wish and want. We think that it is not right to treat our citizens in this manner,” Mustapha added.
Hannan and his wife were arrested on June 25 in connection with alleged financial improprieties. While his wife has since secured her release on a GH¢30 million bail, Hannan remains in custody.
Mr. Mustapha condemned what he described as the deliberate use of “harsh” or “deliberately complicated” bail conditions, warning that such tactics undermine the constitutional right to bail and due process.
