Sixteen-year-old Raymond Kobeta from Tokuu in the Nandom Municipality has become the first beneficiary of the newly launched Sangu Delle Scholarship, a landmark initiative by the Sangu Delle Foundation aimed at supporting academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students across Ghana.
A graduate of Nandom Senior High School in 2024, Raymond scored an impressive aggregate of 11 in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), placing him among the top students in the municipality. However, despite his stellar performance, Raymond’s path to tertiary education was uncertain. With his father deceased and his mother, Madam Agnes Kobeta, struggling to care for the family as a widow, Raymond could not even afford a university application fee.
That changed dramatically on Wednesday, July 3, when the Sangu Delle Foundation, with support from the Nandom Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Tony Zeniel, presented Raymond with a GHS 5,000 cash award and a brand-new HP laptop to aid his academic journey. More significantly, the foundation announced it will sponsor Raymond fully through all four years of university covering tuition, accommodation, and learning materials.
The emotional presentation ceremony held in Nandom marked a turning point not only for Raymond and his family but also for the community, as it highlighted the power of partnership in unlocking the potential of youth in underserved areas.
“This is not just about Raymond,” said Dr. Sangu Delle, founder of the foundation. “It’s about ensuring that no child’s dream dies because of poverty. Brilliance is evenly distributed but opportunity is not. Our mission is to help bridge that gap.”
Hon. Anthony Zeniel commended the foundation and pledged continued collaboration with similar philanthropic efforts. “Raymond’s story is one of many in our communities. We must work together; government, civil society, and development partners — to ensure no child is left behind,” the MCE said.
Speaking after the presentation, Raymond expressed gratitude to the foundation and all who made the opportunity possible. “This support means everything to me. I want to study hard, make my community proud, and one day support others the way I’ve been helped.”
His mother, Madam Agnes Kobeta, also shared her joy and relief, calling the scholarship a "miracle" for the family.
The Sangu Delle Scholarship is expected to be awarded annually to deserving students from rural and underserved communities across Ghana, as part of a broader mission to make education a right, not a privilege.
Raymond’s journey to university is just beginning but with the right support behind him, his future looks bright.
