Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has formally announced his intention to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections as its flagbearer.
He made the declaration during a strategic meeting with more than 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The gathering was part of a broader consultation effort as Dr. Bawumia sets his sights on a political resurgence after the party’s defeat in 2024.
Drawing inspiration from President John Dramani Mahama’s successful return to power, Dr. Bawumia confidently told his audience, “If Mahama can come back and win in 2024, I can also come back and win.” The comment drew widespread approval from the group, many of whom worked under his previous leadership.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP into the 2024 polls, is seeking a second opportunity to carry the party into a general election. His announcement signals the beginning of what is expected to be a heated internal contest as the NPP prepares to rebrand and reposition for 2028.
Insiders at the meeting say his declaration was met with enthusiasm, with a number of former MMDCEs openly pledging their support for his renewed bid.
Other notable figures who have declared their intentions to contest the NPP flagbearership include Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister for Education; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture; Addai Nimoh, former MP for Mampong; and Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central.

You were the vice president for eight years, and together with Akufo-Addo, you engaged in widespread corruption to destroy all the country's infrastructure. Then, you shifted the blame to Akufo-Addo as the driver, while you are the mate. My question is, if the driver drove recklessly and was involved in an acciden...
