Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin on Friday raised objections over the presence of Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the chamber of Parliament, accusing him of entering under questionable circumstances to take photographs with NDC Members of Parliament.
The incident, according to Afenyo-Markin, occurred during a brief suspension of proceedings presided over by Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako.
The Effutu MP alleged that Asiedu Nketia’s real motive for entering the chamber was political, not ceremonial, as he is reportedly preparing to position himself as the NDC’s next flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
“The House was only suspended, not adjourned. The mace, which signifies the House’s authority, was still in place. What was Mr. Nketia doing inside the chamber?” Afenyo-Markin questioned, urging the Speaker to make a formal ruling on the matter.
In defense, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who also represents Bawku Central, dismissed the claims and said Asiedu Nketia’s presence was neither inappropriate nor unusual.
“Mr. Speaker, it will surprise you that some NPP MPs were even struggling to take pictures with Asiedu Nketia, who is endeared by all because of his charismatic leadership,” Ayariga responded, triggering a wave of laughter from both sides of the aisle—including Afenyo-Markin himself.
Ayariga reminded the House that Nketia is no stranger to Parliament, having served three terms as an MP and held key positions, including on the Parliamentary Service Board.
Delivering his ruling, Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako clarified that Asiedu Nketia had every right to visit the chamber, especially since the House was in suspension at the time.
He further explained that as a former lawmaker and parliamentary board member, Asiedu Nketia retains the privilege to observe proceedings, although such visits should typically be coordinated through the Speaker’s Guest Area.
“Just as Mr. Stephen Ntim, the NPP’s National Chairman, can visit and observe proceedings, so can Asiedu Nketia,” the Speaker concluded.
The exchange, though rooted in procedural debate, quickly evolved into a spirited but lighthearted moment in Parliament, drawing laughter and applause as political tensions briefly gave way to comic relief.
