NPP's early presidential primaries will unite party base - Justin Kodua Frimpong

General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has defended the party’s decision to schedule its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, stressing that the early timeline is essential for party unity and strategic preparation ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s political programme “Dwabrem” on Thursday, Frimpong said that electing a flagbearer early gives the party enough time to consolidate internal support, settle disputes, and mobilise resources effectively.

“The earlier we select our presidential candidate, the better for the unity and strategic direction of the party. Whoever leads us into 2028 will need time to bring everyone on board and prepare comprehensively,” he stated.

The NPP’s National Executive Council (NEC) announced the primary date on June 17, 2025. While the decision has sparked mixed reactions within party ranks—with some describing it as rushed—Frimpong insisted it reflects a calculated move aimed at stability and competitiveness.

He assured party members that a detailed framework for the primaries will soon be released. This will include nomination procedures, a campaign calendar, and a binding code of conduct to guide aspirants and ensure a level playing field.

“Our focus is to maintain transparency, fairness, and credibility throughout the process. That’s the only way to preserve our democratic ideals and position ourselves strongly for victory in 2028,” he added.

The NPP is currently undergoing significant reorganisation following its loss in the 2024 general elections. The upcoming primaries are expected to be a defining moment for the party’s direction and leadership renewal.
