NPP NPP NEC warns Abronye and Owusu Bempah over public comments in support of flagbearer aspirants
THU, 19 JUN 2025

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong rebuke to two senior party figures, Ernest Owusu Bempah and Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, warning them to cease their public feud over allegiance to rival presidential hopefuls.

The decision was made at a high-level NEC meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, chaired by Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey.

Owusu Bempah, who serves as a Deputy National Communications Officer, has been a vocal supporter of Kennedy Agyapong, a former contender in the party’s presidential race. Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman, has openly aligned himself with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer in the 2024 election.

Their bitter exchanges in the media have grown more intense since the party's defeat in the 2024 general elections, raising alarm within the NPP leadership over the potential damage to party unity at a crucial time of rebuilding.

In an interview with Citi FM, the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, confirmed the NEC's intervention.

“The National Executive Committee deliberated on the conduct of Owusu Bempah and Abronye and cautioned them strongly. They have been asked to desist from any further public commentary that could inflame tensions within the party,” he stated.

He stressed that maintaining internal cohesion and discipline is vital as the party charts a path forward in opposition and prepares for a series of internal elections leading up to the 2028 general elections.

The NEC's warning is widely seen as part of a broader strategy to rein in factionalism that plagued the NPP during its last presidential primaries. With calls for unity growing louder from grassroots supporters, the party’s leadership appears determined to prevent personal rivalries from derailing its reorganisation efforts.

Party insiders say the NEC is considering further actions to instil discipline and prevent public disagreements from undermining the party’s credibility.

The message from the top is clear: “Enough of the internal squabbling.”
