We thank God Almighty that the US appears to have successfully brokered a peace agreement between DR Congo and its neighbour in the eastern region, Rwanda, which will hopefully stick after it's signed in a week's time.
To ensure the agreement becomes permanent, it's vital that investment for domestic integrated industries based on the DR Congo's array of valuable and vital minerals follows swiftly. The 2024 economic outlook for eastern DR Congo is promising, with potential for growth in the mining sector.
With peace and stability, the region can unlock its potential, creating jobs and wealth that remain local. According to 2024 projections, the mining sector in DR Congo could generate over 500,000 jobs and contribute around $5 billion to the local economy. Investments in refineries for gold and factories for manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) could further boost the economy.
Many investors will likely take advantage of Rwanda's stability and well-run society, basing some plans there too. This partnership could enable both nations to thrive together.
All thoughts of trying President Paul Kagame and the leadership of paramilitary groups for war crimes must now be dropped to incentivise them to make the peace agreement permanent. Ghana, with excellent relations with both DR Congo and Rwanda, and a disciplined military and civilian police service, should be funded and given the task of organising a pan-African peacekeeping force that it will lead.
We must give praise where it's due - so those of us in the continent who are pro-American pan-Africanists, but loathe the authoritarian President Trump's MAGA administration, praise them for brokering this all-important draft peace agreement between the DR Congo and Rwanda and their destructive and murderous pillaging warring proxies who have wreaked such havoc in eastern DR Congo for three decades now. Bravo to them!
