A communications team member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini, says he would be surprised if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elects anyone other than former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP into the 2024 general elections, remains the party’s best option to lead again in 2028.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, June 18, Hamza, however, cautioned the former Vice President against manipulating the internal election process.

“I know that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is in a better position to lead the next New Patriotic Party than any of the contenders. This is in all honesty, and I will be hugely surprised if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not given the opportunity to lead. But he must learn useful lessons.

“He must not allow these guys to destroy the responsibility the party will be entrusting upon him to reform, even before he starts that agenda. And this is a harmless advice to him and his campaign team,” he said.

His comments follow the NPP’s announcement of January 31, 2026, as the date to elect its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, where it hopes to return to power.

The date was approved during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17.

But according to Hamza, the early date is a calculated move by Dr. Bawumia to assert his influence over the party’s rank and file even before a full reorganisation takes place.

Mr Hamza, I urge you to refrain from getting involved in NPP affairs. You are an NDC member and would you keep within your lane and desist from interfering with NPP matters, that would help you and the nation at large. Just do the job assigned to you. We are not here to defend our town folks; that would be nepotism. Ghana now expects best delivery of governance from NDC so please play your part in this new administration and stay away from NPP matters.
