Fire razes Korle Bu Medical Laboratory complex

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully brought a late-night blaze under control at the Korle Bu Medical School’s Medical Laboratory complex on Tuesday, June 18, 2025.

According to a statement from the GNFS Greater Accra Public Relations Office, the fire was reported at exactly 11:50 p.m., prompting an immediate and coordinated response from multiple stations, including the Regional Headquarters, Accra City Fire Station, National Headquarters, and the Ministries Fire Station.

The blaze affected several critical sections of the laboratory block, including the Accounts Office, Administration, Archives, and Stores. Fire crews arrived promptly and managed to contain the fire by 12:43 a.m., with full extinguishment achieved by 4:10 a.m. on Wednesday.

“No injuries were recorded,” the GNFS confirmed, crediting the rapid response and coordination of the fire teams for the successful containment.

Thanks to their efforts, nearby structures—including the Allied Sciences Building, Diabetic Centre, and Stores Annex—were spared any damage.

“The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” the statement noted, adding that thorough overhauling operations were carried out to prevent any potential re-ignition.

The incident has stirred public concern, given the medical school’s strategic role within the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and its affiliation with the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences.
