Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively seeking clearance from Israeli authorities to evacuate Ghanaians as tensions escalate between Israel and Iran.
In a Facebook update on June 16, 2025, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that 922 Ghanaians have been identified in Israel, including 65 university students.
While no injuries or deaths have been reported among Ghanaian nationals in either country, evacuation efforts from Iran are already underway.
Mr. Ablakwa explained that Israel's state of emergency and border closures have stalled immediate evacuation efforts. “Evacuation from that country cannot currently take place without the express authorisation of Israeli authorities,” he stated.
He assured that diplomatic channels are open and ongoing discussions are being held with Israeli officials to secure the necessary clearance.
In the meantime, Ghana’s embassy has arranged access to bomb shelters for its nationals, while embassy staff are working remotely following guidance from Israeli authorities. Communication with the Ghanaian community remains steady.
An emergency evacuation plan for Israel, he said, has already been approved and will be activated once the green light is given.
Mr. Ablakwa stressed that the Mahama administration is fully committed to ensuring the safety of Ghanaians in both conflict zones.
