‘LGBTQ+ is ungodly and I still oppose it’ – Speaker Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has reaffirmed his resolute stance against LGBTQ+ activities, insisting that such practices will neither be accepted nor legalised in Ghana under his watch.

During a working visit to Uganda, Speaker Bagbin firmly rejected what he described as external efforts to impose foreign cultural values on African societies. “You can be sure that the world they want to create and impose on us will not exist while we are alive. LGBT is not African, it is not natural, and God did not create it. This is an imposition that we must all resist,” he declared.

His comments come amid renewed debate across the continent over proposed laws aimed at criminalising LGBTQ+ activity. In Ghana, a similar legislative effort—the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—was passed by the 8th Parliament but failed to secure presidential assent before the end of the term.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo neither signed the bill into law nor referred it to the Supreme Court. Instead, a series of legal challenges were filed by private citizens, who questioned the constitutionality of the bill and the legislative process that birthed it. With the Court yet to deliver a ruling by the close of the 8th Parliament, the bill lapsed.

Bagbin’s latest remarks echo his longstanding belief that Ghana’s cultural and moral foundations are incompatible with LGBTQ+ practices and that any attempts to introduce them must be resisted as alien to African values.

One assumption you and others of similar stance on the issue make is that Gayism and Lesbianism, for instance, are just life-style choices that people make. Not so. These are phenomena that have been known for centuries. Mr Speaker, it is rampant in the dormitories of our secondary schools, es...
