Dr. Freda Prempeh, former Member of Parliament and founder of the Ultimate Women Foundation (UWF), has called on families to extend forgiveness to fathers who may have fallen short of their responsibilities.
She emphasized the importance of compassion and understanding, stating, “Motherhood and fatherhood are experiences everybody will go through,” and added, “as we mark the Fathers’ Day celebration, we must endeavour to forgive the wrongs and irresponsibility of our fathers too.”
Speaking to the media in Duayaw-Nkwanta, Dr. Prempeh said her foundation is committed to empowering indigenous women and girls to improve their overall well-being and comfort. She underscored the vital role fathers play in the family unit and encouraged those who have been neglectful to reflect and change.
She described fathers as central figures in the home, saying, “fatherhood goes beyond providing the needs but also ensuring general security of the family.”
She further urged fathers to foster closer relationships with their daughters, adding, “Fathers must also draw closer to their girls, listen to them and provide them with the menstrual and counselling needs as well.”
Dr. Prempeh acknowledged that while the stability of a cohesive family largely depends on the role of the father, mothers also have a significant part to play. She encouraged women to engage in meaningful ventures to support their families.
She concluded by wishing all fathers a joyous celebration and encouraged children to express their appreciation: “Show some kind of love and care to your fathers by buying them gifts.”
