Nothing wrong to have a branch of Supreme Court in the north — Justice Senyo Dzamefe

Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has backed the idea of establishing a branch of the Supreme Court in northern Ghana to ease access to justice.

Responding to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga during his vetting on June 16, Justice Dzamefe said, "I do not see anything wrong if we have to get a branch of the Supreme Court in northern Ghana if there is the need."

On calls to expand the number of judges at the apex court, he supported the move, citing the backlog of cases. "The number of justices at the Supreme Court has not been capped for a reason; if the number of judges is to be increased because of the delays and case load, I support it," he stated.

When asked about presidential term limits, he simply said, "My response to this question is what the Constitution says."

Justice Dzamefe also proposed reforms to improve judicial delivery, including better staff motivation, creation of more courts, investment in digital tools, and strict case timelines. "When the appropriate technology is deployed, it should be possible to use virtual courts so that people can give evidence wherever they are," he noted.

He is one of seven Court of Appeal judges nominated by President John Mahama for elevation to the Supreme Court.
