The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ordered Awutu Senya East MP, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, to immediately stop using the academic title "Doctor," stating that she lacks the required qualifications to do so.

In a formal letter, GTEC said Ms. Okunor has no accredited doctoral degree and is therefore not entitled to use the title in any official or public setting. The directive follows mounting concerns from the academic community and sections of the public questioning the legitimacy of her claim to the title.

GTEC underscored that its action falls squarely within its mandate to enforce standards in Ghana’s tertiary education sector and safeguard the credibility of academic distinctions.

"The title 'Dr.' is reserved for individuals who have legitimately earned doctoral degrees from recognised, accredited institutions,” the Commission said.

Though GTEC did not provide details on how the issue came to light, it stressed the importance of public officials maintaining academic and ethical integrity.

As of now, Ms. Okunor has not publicly responded to the directive.
