Supreme Court nominee, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, has proposed the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and time-bound court proceedings to improve the speed of justice delivery in Ghana.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 16, the High Court judge said integrating AI into the justice system would help reduce delays caused by manual processes and frequent adjournments.

“I talk about the tools. If we can go AI, such that recordings are done swiftly and transcribed at the end of the day, you just sign. It makes it faster,” he said.

Justice Dzamefe also cited the persistent issue of adjournments—often due to reasons such as lawyers calling in sick—as a major setback and called for reforms to ensure court sessions proceed without unnecessary disruptions.

He further suggested that rules of court should set strict time limits for cases.

“No criminal case should go beyond three months. No civil case should go beyond a certain period. Then we all know we are constrained to finish within that time,” he proposed.

The nominee also recommended the establishment of more courts across the country to ease the burden on existing ones and help expedite legal processes.

“If we have more courts, the workload is lessened. One court won’t have plenty of cases if others are around,” he stressed.
