President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to establish a public university in the Savannah Region, marking a major step in his agenda to broaden access to tertiary education and drive development in underserved areas.

Speaking at a community engagement in the region, Mr. Mahama underscored the importance of equitable educational opportunities and regional inclusivity in national development. He framed the initiative as part of a larger commitment to bridging disparities in access to quality education across the country.

“I am happy to announce that a public university will be established in the Savannah Region,” Mr. Mahama stated to loud applause from residents and stakeholders gathered at the event.

He explained that the proposed institution would not only open doors for thousands of young people in the Savannah Region and neighboring areas but also act as a catalyst for local transformation. The university is expected to generate employment, attract investment, spur infrastructure development, and support research tailored to the region’s specific needs.

The declaration has received strong backing from traditional authorities, youth organizations, and educational advocates, who have long pushed for a public university in the region to address the deep-seated educational imbalance between Ghana’s urban and rural areas.
