36 prison inmates sit for 2025 BECE

A total of 36 prison inmates are taking part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), in a continuing effort by the Ghana Prisons Service to rehabilitate inmates through formal education.

All the candidates are male, comprising 18 juveniles from the Senior Correctional Centre (SCC), seven inmates from the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, six from the Ho Central Prison, and five from the Kumasi Central Prison.

Chief Superintendent Adamu Abdul Latif, Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, confirmed the development in an interview with the Daily Graphic. He noted that the inmates have been adequately prepared for the exams through structured lessons delivered by certified teachers from both the Prisons Service and the Ghana Education Service.

“Our officers, together with GES teachers, have worked hard to ensure these candidates are academically ready,” he said. “We are confident they will perform well across all subjects.”

Chief Supt. Latif explained that each inmate was registered at an examination centre near their respective correctional facility. During the examination period, the candidates are transported under armed escort to and from the centres.

The BECE, a critical component of Ghana’s educational ladder, serves as the main assessment for transition from Junior High School to Senior High School and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

The formal education programme within the prison system was launched in 2007 as part of the Service’s broader rehabilitation strategy. It aims to equip inmates with essential literacy skills and academic credentials to enhance their reintegration into society upon release.

The first cohort—comprising 21 juvenile and young offenders—sat for the BECE in 2009 and achieved a 100 percent pass rate. The Prisons Service has since maintained that record, with each subsequent group of candidates successfully passing the exam.

By offering second chances through education, the Ghana Prisons Service continues to demonstrate its commitment to modern correctional practices that focus not just on confinement, but on meaningful reform and reintegration.
