The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) says its members cannot effectively care for patients if the system neglects their welfare.
GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, made this statement at a press briefing in Accra on Friday, June 13, as the Association announced the suspension of its nationwide strike.
“As nurses and midwives, we do not take delight in seeing our patients suffer. However, we cannot take good care of others when the system does not take good care of us,” she said.
The Association noted that its just-ended industrial action was plagued by misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda aimed at misrepresenting their motives.
“Having monitored the misinformation, disinformation and propaganda that have surrounded our strike action, the leadership of the Association would like to set the record straight. We are nurses and midwives trained to provide essential health services to the Ghanaian population, and matters affecting us, when formally brought to the attention of the employer, must be treated with the urgency they deserve and in good faith,” Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo stated.
She further clarified that GRNMA is a professional body and has never aligned itself with any political party since its formation in 1960 as many speculated.
The Association suspended its strike, which began fully on June 9, following what it described as a fruitful engagement with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health on June 12.
The strike was aimed at demanding the implementation of a collective agreement signed with the government in May 2024.
