The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has inaugurated a 15-member Governing Council for the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), aimed at strengthening disaster risk management across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister described NADMO’s crucial role in protecting lives and livelihoods before, during, and after disasters, stressing on the organization’s importance in ensuring national resilience and stability, particularly in the face of natural disasters, health emergencies as well as human-induced crises.
Mr. Muntaka charged the newly sworn-in Council with the responsibility of providing strong policy direction and supporting NADMO’s leadership in achieving its strategic goals.
He emphasised the importance of community-centered operations, ensuring that disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and risk reduction are rooted in local engagement.
He urged the Council to operate as a cohesive team, guided by the principles of transparency, accountability, professionalism, patriotism, and bold in decision-making, inclusive practices as well as have strategic oversight responsibilities.
He assured the Council of the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with NADMO and other relevant agencies to ensure the organization is adequately resourced and well-equipped to respond effectively to disasters.
“I’m confident the Council will help NADMO deliver on its mandate to protect lives and build national resilience. Together, we will ensure Ghana is better prepared before, during, and after disasters,” the minister said.
The Chairman of the Council, Mr. Samuel Atta Mills, echoed the Minister’s sentiments and called for greater collaboration in disaster management.
He emphasised that disaster response must be coupled with efforts to build national resilience and that the Council will adopt a proactive approach in managing emergencies across the country.
