Jerry Ahmed Shaib pays late-night tour of flood-hit areas in Weija-Gbawe

Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Mr. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, undertook a late-night inspection of flood-hit communities in his constituency following torrential rains that left several areas inundated and residents stranded.

The unannounced visit aimed to gauge the extent of the destruction firsthand, engage directly with affected residents, and map out immediate interventions to alleviate their distress.

Flood victims voiced their frustrations over the chronic nature of the problem, citing years of unfulfilled promises and the absence of sustainable drainage systems.

Many expressed despair over the recurring damage to their homes, businesses, and livelihoods every rainy season.

Clearly disturbed by the scenes on the ground, Mr. Shaib described the situation as “deeply concerning” and issued a direct appeal to the Minister for Works and Housing to fast-track the long-delayed construction of a major storm drain along the Accra-Kasoa Highway—a critical piece of infrastructure that residents say has been discussed for far too long without action.

“These interventions are not just infrastructural—they are lifesaving. We cannot continue to watch lives and property destroyed every time it rains,” Mr. Shaib stated.

He further urged the Ministry of Roads and Highways to prioritize the installation of streetlights along key roads in the constituency, especially the Accra-Kasoa stretch.

According to the MP, poor visibility during storms and at night has become a major hazard, contributing to traffic accidents and endangering pedestrians.

Mr. Shaib reaffirmed his commitment to lobbying for stronger government support, warning that without urgent attention, flooding will remain a deadly and costly problem for the constituency.

He pledged to hold relevant authorities accountable until permanent, long-term solutions are delivered to protect residents and infrastructure from future devastation.
