Renowned Ghanaian economist and leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Pianim, has described President John Dramani Mahama as a “listening president” capable of restoring the country to a path of progress.

According to him, out of Ghana’s population of over 35 million people, President Mahama is the only one who can effectively reset the nation and leave behind a lasting legacy.

Mr. Pianim made these remarks on Wednesday, June 11, during a courtesy call on the President at Jubilee House by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

Mr. Pianim urged all Ghanaians to rally behind the President for the sake of national unity and democratic advancement.

“Mr. President, as I’ve told you before, of the 35 or 36 million Ghanaians alive, you are the only one who can reset Ghana for us,” he said. “I’ve told people on the other side — when I put on my political cap — that all of us must ensure democracy works and support you. This is a historic opportunity for Ghana, and you are the right person. You don’t need votes or party pressure. Just do the best for Ghana and leave a legacy.”

Touching on the concerns of teachers, Mr. Pianim expressed confidence that President Mahama will deliver on promises made to them — unlike the previous administration which pledged to build over 10,000 houses for teachers but failed to fulfil it.

“Everyone is who they are because of a teacher. That’s why we must look after our teachers and pay them well. Canada has set a good example, where teaching is one of the best jobs you can have. But here, we underpay our teachers.

“I was happy when GNAT said they were coming to speak with the President. I told them, with this President, if he says he will do something, he will. Somebody once promised them 10,000 houses — they got nothing. But this is a listening President,” stated Mr. Pianim.
