A leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has called for the release of inmates at the Nsawam Prison if the state fails to extradite former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, to face justice over alleged corruption.

According to him, the crimes of those imprisoned do not compare to the alleged financial losses caused by Mr. Ofori-Atta and his associates.

“He should be forced to come down. Otherwise, all those in Nsawam Prison must be released, because the net effect of their crimes comes nowhere near what we’ve been subjected to over the last eight years. And we must take it very, very seriously,” he stressed.

Mr. Owusu made these comments on Accra-based TV3’s New Day show on Wednesday, June 11, while discussing the controversial contract between the government and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML), which he described as a “create, loot and share” scheme.

“If you have ever engaged yourself in the petroleum sector, nobody will convince you that we needed any entity called SML. It was create, loot and share, and that is why Ken Ofori-Atta is out of this country,” he stated.

The former NPP member also urged the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to place a $5 million bounty on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s head to speed up his extradition.

“I have told the OSP that the earlier he put a bounty on the head of Ken Ofori-Atta, the better. Now, I don’t take him seriously. He should put $5 million on his head, and I will be in the United States tomorrow on the first flight, looking for Ken Ofori-Atta. The amount of money involved, together with his accomplices, is too much,” he said.

Meanwhile, the OSP has declared the former finance minister wanted and placed him on INTERPOL’s Red Notice, with efforts ongoing to bring him back to Ghana.
