Akosua Manu Appeals to Vice President Opoku-Agyemang Over Treatment of Chief Justice

Akosua Asaa Manu, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) former parliamentary candidate for Adentan, has called on Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to speak out against what she described as the degrading and unfair treatment of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a strongly worded open letter issued on Tuesday, June 10, Madam Manu urged the Vice President to intervene in what she called a troubling attempt to humiliate the Chief Justice, who has been suspended by President John Dramani Mahama pending ongoing investigations.

Madam Manu expressed deep concern over the nature of the developments surrounding Justice Torkornoo, suggesting that the events appear less about accountability and more about public disgrace.

“Any observer not exercising extreme restraint can only conclude that there is a deliberate and concerted effort not only to remove Madam Torkornoo but also to subject her to the highest possible form of public ridicule,” she stated.

Drawing from Ghana’s history of female judicial leadership, Manu reminded the Vice President of the legacy of Justices Georgina Wood and Sophia Akuffo, questioning why Chief Justice Torkornoo is being treated differently.

“Why, then, is she [Torkornoo] not merely being pushed out, but also being bruised and embarrassed on her way out?” she asked, suggesting a pattern of hostility that threatens to overshadow the contributions of women in leadership.

She appealed to Vice President Opoku-Agyemang to stand up for the dignity of the judiciary and to use her influence to halt what she termed “an injustice in progress.”

“This is not about shielding any official from accountability. It is about safeguarding the dignity of our institutions and the message we convey to every Ghanaian girl with dreams,” Madam Manu wrote in a closing plea that framed the issue as one of national values, not partisan loyalty.

Her letter adds to the growing public discourse surrounding the suspension of the Chief Justice, which has divided opinion and drawn attention to the broader implications for Ghana’s judicial independence and institutional respect.

Do you understand the English words of "robbing someone's dignity?" The last time l read an article about such phrases was when a young woman has been raped in a community that she lives. I have no idea that when people are not interested in a corrupt and biased chief justice, the people or the government in power is robbing her dignity.

Is Mahama's government heading in the right direction?
