Dear critical reader, shouldn't Ghana cease pampering non-African cybercriminal suspects apprehended by our law enforcement agencies in the AI era? Haaba. One asks because not too long ago, when a mostly Nigerian group of suspected cybercriminals were apprehended, they were paraded before the media, and their faces were shown to the world. Why, then, are the faces of this cohort of non-African cybercrime suspects blurred in the photograph accompanying the online version of the Daily Graphic article (https://www.graphic.com.gh/news/general-news/ten-foreign-nationals-arrested-for-cybercrime-in-joint-police-gra-operation-at-weija.html)?
Ghana must be the only nation on Earth where non-African nationals suspected of engaging in ruinous criminal activities are treated with kid gloves, despite the enormous harm their activities cause to our national economy and the unfortunate reputational harm to our image as a people globally. It really is intolerable – which is why, as wise and aspirational Africans in the AI era, we must stop this foolishness, oooo, Ghanafuor.
How do we know that they aren't capable of harming our critical infrastructure by launching cyberattacks on our bedrock system's key institutions and holding us to ransom, Ghanafuor? The more responsible sections of Ghana's media landscape must follow this story to its logical conclusion. This particular cohort of cybercriminals must not be allowed to manoeuvre their way out and escape prosecution, followed by jail sentences and swift deportation back to their home countries afterwards, oooo, Ghanafuor. Yoooooooooo. A word to the wise...
