Alfred Ababio Kumi, a youth activist with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former parliamentary hopeful, has been charged with publishing false information following his arrest by operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on Friday.

Popularly known as Adenta Kumi, he is accused of spreading unverified claims through social media posts on his X (formerly Twitter) account and in a radio interview, all linked to a petition he submitted to the President.

The petition, which has attracted significant attention, calls for the dissolution of the committee currently investigating the Chief Justice. Kumi alleges that members of the committee engaged in conduct that could potentially compromise the fairness of the inquiry.

According to the petition, Kumi claims that on May 15, 2025—the day the committee held its first hearing—Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, together with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area with lawyer Thaddeus Sory, who is representing petitioner Daniel Ofori. He further alleges the group was overheard discussing details related to the case.

In the wake of his arrest, the New Patriotic Party has expressed strong concerns about what it describes as the troubling manner in which Adenta Kumi was detained and the implications it may have for freedom of expression.
