A communication team member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Ekua Amoakoh, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of attempting to weaken the party through acts of political intimidation.
According to her, such efforts will not succeed but rather reignite the spirit of the NPP after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“Intimidation Friday was a sad day for our beaconing democracy. It is not surprising to see such cheap and archaic revolutionary tactics from the ruling NDC, but they’ve got it absolutely wrong. This display of thuggery will not intimidate the NPP in any way, but would rather galvanize and awaken the soul of the party,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Her comments come after the NPP condemned the arrest of one of its members, Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, in what eyewitnesses described as a “Rambo-style” operation carried out by officers of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on Friday, May 23.
Kumi had earlier petitioned President Mahama to dissolve the five-member committee probing calls for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo.
The petition cited an alleged informal meeting involving three committee members and a lawyer connected to the case.
The NPP also described as an “invasion” the presence of police and National Security operatives at the home of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Koduah Frimpong, called on Ghanaians and all defenders of democracy to rise against what he described as an attack on democratic values and the rule of law.
