The recent arrest of Adenta Kumi by officers from the National Investigative Bureau (NIB) has ignited a wave of public concern, with many criticizing what they perceive as an infringement on the right to petition the President and engage in democratic dialogue.

Kumi was reportedly taken from his home at dawn by a team of eight NIB officers. While the official reasons for his arrest remain murky, sources indicate it might be linked to his recent petition urging the President to disband the committee investigating the Chief Justice.

Among those speaking out against the arrest is Franklin Cudjoe, the President of the policy think tank Imani Africa, who labeled the situation as “reprehensible.”

In a post on social media, he called for Kumi’s immediate release, emphasizing that no citizen should be arrested for voicing their concerns through lawful channels. “It is unacceptable for Adenta Kumi to be arrested for petitioning the President on any issue. He must be released without delay,” Cudjoe stated.

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, was the first to reveal the arrest in a social media update, highlighting the early morning operation by the NIB at Kumi’s residence.

As questions continue to arise and demands for clarity intensify, civil society groups and concerned citizens are calling for transparency from the authorities and a commitment to upholding constitutional rights.
