In a major policy shift aimed at boosting travel and investment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced a new visa directive that ensures all applications to Ghana will be processed within five working days.
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made the announcement via Facebook on Tuesday, May 21, 2025, noting that the policy takes immediate effect. The reform is part of efforts to eliminate delays that previously plagued Ghana’s visa system.
“We have put in place adequate measures at our diplomatic missions to drastically cut down the visa processing time from the troubling average of four to six weeks to our new five-day directive,” Mr. Ablakwa wrote.
Under the revised policy, visa applicants will now receive a decision—whether approved or rejected—within five business days of submitting a complete application.
“A decision will be made within five working days as to whether one is eligible for a Ghanaian visa or not,” he explained.
This development reflects the government’s broader goal of enhancing Ghana’s international appeal. Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the measure aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s declaration during his January 7, 2025 inauguration that “Ghana is opened for business.”
He added that by eliminating unnecessary bureaucratic obstacles, the Ministry hopes to promote a more accessible and investment-friendly Ghana.
“As Foreign Minister, I want to make Ghana a more attractive destination for investors and tourists by removing the bureaucratic hurdles that have discouraged many over the years,” Ablakwa stated.
The policy is expected to contribute significantly to Ghana’s economic diplomacy by encouraging tourism, business visits, and global partnerships. “Ghana is truly open for business. Come enjoy the Black Star experience,” the Foreign Minister concluded.
