The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has announced that 925 of the 2,241 illegal immigrants arrested in Accra for street begging have been repatriated.

In a press release issued in Accra on May 20, 2025, and signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Michael Amoako-Atta, the GIS confirmed that the repatriation process began on the morning of Saturday, May 17.

“Repatriation was initiated in the morning of Saturday, 17th May, 2025. At the time of this release, 925 persons have been successfully repatriated, and processes are underway to remove the rest,” the statement said.

The GIS assured the public that detainees were being treated humanely, with the Service providing meals and other essential needs. The GIS Clinic, it added, was on standby to offer medical care where required. To prevent overcrowding at the Holding Centre at the National Headquarters, a temporary suspension of arrests has been implemented.

The Service emphasized that the ongoing Special Operation is being conducted in full respect of human rights.

“The GIS remains committed to its core values of Professionalism and Respect for Human Rights, and assures the general public of humane handling of affected immigrants,” the release stated.

Acknowledging the support received, the GIS expressed appreciation to all stakeholders, especially the media and the general public, for their cooperation throughout the exercise.

The statement further reaffirmed GIS’s mandate and dedication to ensuring national security and effective migration management.

“As Ghana's lead agency in migration management and border security, the GIS assures the general public of its commitment to operating fair and firm immigration systems and contributing to national security and development,” it noted.

The GIS concluded by announcing that the Special Operation will resume in due course as part of broader efforts to clear beggars from the streets and dismantle associated criminal networks.
