A new national survey by Global Info Analytics has revealed that a majority of Ghanaians support President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, nearly a month after the decision took effect.
The poll, conducted between May 2 and May 19, 2025, found that 53% of registered voters approve of the suspension, while 20% disapprove. Another 12% were neutral, and 15% had no opinion. The suspension, which took effect on April 22, followed the President’s decision to act on three petitions after a prima facie case was established.
The survey sampled 2,558 registered voters across all 16 regions, with a margin of error of ±2.51%.
Among those who initially opposed the suspension, were neutral, or had no opinion, only 20% said they would support the Chief Justice’s removal if she were found to have acted unlawfully. This marked a drop from 30% in April. Meanwhile, 33% said they would still oppose her removal (down from 35%), 20% remained neutral (up from 19%), and 27% expressed no opinion (up from 16%).
Regionally, support for the suspension was strong in all regions except the North East and Northern regions. Along political lines, the suspension received overwhelming support from NDC voters (87%) and a majority of floating voters (54%), while only 13% of NPP voters approved of the decision.
Of those opposed to the suspension, 51% identified as NPP supporters, 2% as NDC, 9% as floating voters, 2% affiliated with other parties, and 9% withheld their political affiliation.
President Mahama’s decision was based on Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which mandates the establishment of a committee to investigate allegations against a superior court judge once a prima facie case has been found.
