Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, a former Board Chairperson of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), was rushed to the hospital early Tuesday morning, leading to his second consecutive absence from court in the ongoing $2 million Sky Train trial.
His lawyer, Duke Aaron Sasu, informed the Accra High Court that the former minister had suffered a medical emergency and was receiving treatment at a hospital ward.
The development comes as the case against Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi and former GIIF CEO, Solomon Asamoah, continues to unfold. The two are standing trial for their alleged roles in the unauthorized transfer of $2 million from GIIF’s account to Africa Investor Holdings Limited, a South African company.
The money was meant for equity in the proposed Sky Train project, but no returns or progress were made after the funds were disbursed.
Meanwhile, Solomon Asamoah, who appeared in court under police escort, remains in custody after failing to meet his bail conditions. He has been charged with six counts, including conspiracy, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, and intentional dissipation of public funds.
The court, presided over by Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame, had granted Asamoah bail in the sum of GH¢15 million, with two sureties to be justified with registered land in Ghana.
Following the hospitalisation of Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, the court granted an adjournment. The next hearing is scheduled for May 26, 2025.
