Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced significant progress in the distribution of Ghana’s newly launched chip-embedded passports.

He revealed that 8,463 Ghanaians have so far received their new passports via courier, free of charge.

In a social media post on Saturday, May 17, the Minister said the achievement reflects the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s commitment to serving the people.

“An impressive 8,463 Ghanaians have conveniently received their new chip-embedded passports across the country via courier without paying extra charges since our April 28, 2025 Reset Passport Reforms. That’s according to official data from the Passport Head Office. Mahama’s government is here to serve you diligently, and to keep our pledges to you,” he stated.

Ghana stopped issuing the old biometric passports on April 28, 2025, as part of its transition to chip-embedded passports in line with requirements from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Despite the halt in issuance, the old biometric passports will remain valid until 2030.

Passport holders can apply for the chip-embedded version at any time. Those renewing their passports will automatically receive the new one.

The Minister earlier disclosed that Cabinet has reduced the application fee for an ordinary chip-embedded passport from GHS500 to GHS350.

The new fee will take effect after Parliament approves the updated Fees and Charges Act in the coming weeks.

The new passport includes a biographical data page made from layers of polymer compressed into a solid substrate.

Holders have been cautioned not to bend it or keep it in pockets, especially back pockets.
