President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to donate six months of his salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares.

He first made the pledge during the launch of the fund at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Tuesday, April 29.

However, speaking again at an event at the Jubilee House on Friday, May 16, the President revealed that he is yet to receive his salary, humorously stating that he has been frequently checking his bank account in anticipation.

According to him, once the Accountant General completes the necessary processes and his salary is paid, he will sign a cheque to honour his promise.

“It is obvious that government’s resources alone will not be sufficient, and that is why we decided to do fundraising to top up whatever government has given. I kick-started it with six months of my salary,” he said.

“Unfortunately, I have been checking my bank account and I haven’t started receiving a salary yet. Chief of Staff, what is happening? So I don’t know how much six months of my salary is worth. But I can assure you, as soon as the Accountant General starts paying my salary, I will write a cheque for all six months to support the Mahama Cares,” the President added.

The fund is intended to support Ghanaians who require specialized medical care not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), particularly those suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure, and heart conditions.

President Mahama said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of treatment and improve access to life-saving healthcare for vulnerable citizens.

Meanwhile, the Military High Command have also made a donation of one month salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
