Dollar gift saga: ‘I would have sacked Sammy Gyamfi if I were the president’ — Kennedy Agyapong

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, says the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, should have faced harsher punishment for giving dollar notes to self-styled evangelist, Nana Agradaa.

Sammy Gyamfi came under intense public criticism after a video surfaced showing him handing an undisclosed amount of dollar notes to Nana Agradaa from his car.

Despite apologising, several groups — including the Minority Caucus and anti-corruption campaigners — have called on the President to suspend him.

But addressing the media on Wednesday, May 14, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said Mr Gyamfi’s apology, which aligns with the code of conduct’s corrective measures, was enough.

He added that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has cautioned and advised the Gold Board CEO to be more mindful of his public conduct going forward.

Reacting to the matter at an event on Thursday, May 15, Mr Agyapong said he would have dismissed the Gold Board CEO outright.

To the former Assin Central Member of Parliament, the act captured in the video was enough evidence that Gyamfi had erred.

“In the news, you hear Agradaa and Sammy Gyamfi. If I were the president, now fire — Sammy Gyamfi would have been fired right away, not even a second, because the evidence is clear. I don’t need to go and do any investigation,” he said.
