The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications and Spokesperson to President John Dramani Mahama, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, observes Ghanaians will no longer tolerate misconduct from government appointees.
He assured that appointees under the Mahama-led administration are fully committed to upholding the standards expected by citizens.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, May 14, the Minister, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese, stressed the need for public officials to separate their private lifestyles from acceptable public conduct.
“We are aware that Ghanaians expect high standards in the performance of our duties as public officials. We remain committed to meeting those high standards to ensure that we deliver the best of governance to our people who have long suffered in the last few years under poor governance,” he stated.
His comments follow a public backlash involving the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, after a video emerged showing him handing an undisclosed amount of dollar notes to self-styled evangelist Nana Agradaa from his car.
Despite issuing an apology on Sunday, May 11, many Ghanaians — including the Minority in Parliament and civil society — called for his suspension.
However, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the apology, which aligns with the government’s code of conduct, is adequate.
He added that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has also cautioned and advised the Gold Board CEO to be mindful of his public conduct going forward.
“The presidency does not believe that any further actions need to be taken beyond the apology and the caution from the Chief of Staff. We all take a cue from it and are going to do better to meet the expectations of the Ghanaian public,” he said.
“It is not deemed necessary at this moment to take further action beyond what has already been done,” he added.
