The five-member committee of inquiry set up by President John Dramani Mahama to probe petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, is set to officially begin hearings.

The committee, chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court, will commence its sittings on Thursday, May 15.

A statement from the Presidency, signed by the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and dated May 14, said the committee will sit three times a week.

“The committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to inquire into three petitions filed against the Chief Justice will commence hearings tomorrow, Thursday, 15th May, 2025.

“The five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court was set up by the President in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, following a determination of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice,” the statement read.

It added, “The committee will sit three times a week and present their recommendations to the President upon completion of their work.”

The committee was formed after President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice on April 22, following the determination of a prima facie case in consultation with the Council of State concerning three separate petitions.

The committee is chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court, with members including Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, also a Justice of the Supreme Court; Daniel Yaw Domelevo, former Auditor-General; Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces; and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor at the University of Ghana.
