Enraged students of the Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region have vandalized properties belonging to the school after authorities seized their mobile phones.

The damage occurred on Tuesday May 13, at about 1700hours, after school authorities confiscated more than 200 phones during class hours.

The exasperated students took the law into their hands and staged a protest, which escalated into destruction of properties including the school bus and also assaulted some teachers in the melee.

The military command in the Municipality, however, intervened and quelled the situation, calming the situation, after the authorities reached out to them.

Some of the students caught in the act were canned for exhibiting violent conduct.

Mr Solomon Bagman, the Headmaster of the school, however, described the situation as unfortunate.

He, however, gave the assurance that disciplinary measures among students would be the topmost priority of the school.

Mr. Jonathan Korsinah, the Municipal Education Director, also condemned the act and assured that thorough investigation into the incident was underway, and those found guilty would face the law.

“We are working with both parents and school authorities to resolve the issue and prevent similar incidents even in the future,” he assured.

So far, nine students have been arrested by the Nkwanta Police in connection with the incident, especially against the destruction of properties.
