Education E/R: Thieves strip roofing sheets and steal desks from Akyem Oda Anglican School during break
WED, 14 MAY 2025

Thieves have brazenly stolen all the roofing sheets and metal school desks from the 'B' block of St. Andrew Anglican Basic School at Akyem Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region while the school was on break.

The shocking incident was disclosed by Papa Yaw Amoah, Assembly Member for the Asene Electoral Area, who expressed disbelief at the scale of the theft. According to him, the entire roof of the 'B' block was removed, and every metal chair in the classrooms was taken.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Amoah recalled that the ‘A’ block of the school had previously been damaged by a storm and was recently re-roofed by the government. Pupils who had been relocated to the ‘B’ block during that period had just moved back to the renovated ‘A’ block.

Plans were already in place to refurbish the ‘B’ block, including repainting, so that pupils could return. However, those plans were derailed when it was discovered that thieves had stripped the building of its entire roof and stolen all the furniture during the break.

“This is a huge setback for the school and the community,” Mr. Amoah lamented. “The building is now exposed to the elements, and the ceiling has already suffered water damage. If nothing is done urgently, the structure will deteriorate further.”

He issued an urgent appeal to the government, philanthropic individuals, NGOs, and relevant institutions to help re-roof the facility and replace the stolen desks to restore a safe learning environment for the pupils.
