Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has issued a strong warning to government appointees within the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), cautioning that their appointments could be revoked if they continue to undermine the confirmation of presidential nominees.
Her remarks come in the wake of multiple rejections of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) nominees, which she attributed to sabotage by some appointed assembly members.
Speaking to the assembly members of the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly, the Minister stressed the responsibilities of government appointees and made clear that failure to support the President’s choices would not be tolerated.
“Government appointees, you don’t have any business in the house; your business is to confirm the President’s nominee. Your business in the house is to work or approve the President’s nominee,” she stated.
She further warned: “A series of issues we have had are related to all government appointees. And a lot of the appointees, we are also going to revoke the appointments. You are not fulfilling your business.”
Despite her warning, the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly voted against Felix Odartey Lamptey’s nomination as Municipal Chief Executive. Lamptey, who also serves as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency, secured only 9 out of the 19 votes cast—falling short of the two-thirds majority required for approval.
The rejection sparked disappointment among supporters and residents present at the assembly, many of whom voiced frustration over the assembly’s decision.
