Dollar sharing saga: Sammy Gyamfi has demonstrated maturity — Beatrice Annan

A Presidential Staffer, Beatrice Annan, has commended the conduct of the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following public backlash over his dollar donation to self-styled evangelist Patricia Asiedu, popularly known as Agradaa.

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was captured in a viral video handing over an undisclosed amount of cash to the former fetish priestess—an act that sparked widespread outrage and criticism, including from within his own party.

The uproar compelled Sammy Gyamfi to issue an unqualified apology on Sunday, May 11, describing his action as unfortunate and regrettable.

“I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by same. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views,” he wrote.

Reacting to this on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Monday, May 12, Beatrice Annan described Sammy Gyamfi’s response as a mark of maturity.

“Sammy Gyamfi has demonstrated a lot of maturity. When was the last time you heard a public official come out to say, ‘I am sorry for an indiscretion’?

“When something happens, many just deny it outright or offer all sorts of excuses. Sammy has admitted it was a total indiscretion. There’s no need to belabour the point,” she said.

She further argued that Gyamfi has not breached the code of conduct as some have claimed, stating that public apology is a recognised form of sanction.

“If you read the code of conduct, you’ll realise that one of the prescribed sanctions is a public apology. And that in itself is a form of punishment because it’s not easy for a public official to apologise publicly,” she added.
