Energy Minister John Jinapor has given assurances that Ghana’s ongoing electricity supply challenges—commonly referred to as dumsor—will be brought under control before the end of May 2025.

In an interview with TV3, the minister linked the current power outages to critical maintenance activities being carried out on several of the country’s aging power plants. He noted that these efforts are essential to stabilizing the national grid and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply.

“What I get is that within the month of May, there will be major maintenance, and in June, there will be minimal maintenance. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should be seeing a stable power supply,” Jinapor stated.

He explained that many of the power plants currently in operation have exceeded their optimal running hours, making servicing an urgent necessity to avoid breakdowns and long-term damage.

“These are plants that have gone far beyond their maximum operating hours. So, as a responsible government, we have to undertake the servicing,” he said.

He stressed that delaying the maintenance could compromise the integrity of the facilities and lead to more severe power problems in the future.

While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the recent power cuts, Jinapor urged Ghanaians to bear with the government as steps are taken to resolve the crisis.

“We will do everything within our power to reduce the impact. It is a necessary step,” he emphasized.

The minister’s comments come amid growing public anxiety and calls for clarity on when the erratic power supply will be resolved.
